European Union Could Retaliate to ‘Unjustified’ US Travel Restrictions, Spokesperson Says

The European Union could “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it deems “unwarranted” travel bans issued by the United States on five Europeans working on combating online hate and misinformation, an EU official has said.

EU Officials Decry US Action as ‘Coercion’

European leaders such as Emmanuel Macron accused Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, following the travel bans were placed on figures who have been at the heart of campaigns to enact legislation regulating US-based technology firms.

“For too long, ideologues in Europe have led coordinated campaigns to pressure US companies to punish American viewpoints they oppose,” wrote a senior US official in a social media post. “This government will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”

Widespread Condemnation From EU Nations

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported France in criticizing the decision.

The restrictions were enacted this week on a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as several anti-disinformation campaigners, including Germany and the United Kingdom.

An Escalating Conflict Over Regulation

This European legislation is viewed by US officials as a form of censorship, while EU authorities argue the rules are essential to control inflammatory language and disinformation.

This disagreement threatens to become part of a much broader existing cultural and political conflict involving Washington and Europe.
