A recent study reveals that individuals who come off blockbuster GLP-1 drugs like Wegovy and Mounjaro may regain reduced body mass much more quickly than those who halt traditional lifestyle plans.
Published data in a leading health publication points out that while obese individuals can lose a large proportion of their body weight while using the jabs, the mass returns at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.
"People buying such treatments should be aware of the danger of fast rebound weight gain when the treatment ends," cautioned expert Dr. Susan Jebb.
This pace of regain suggests a reversion to starting mass within about a year and a half.
Comparing Approaches
The study, which looked at 37 of trials involving over 9,000 of patients, contrasted the results of GLP-1 agonists with older methods.
Scientists note that individuals who shed pounds through dieting generally have a slower creep back—perhaps 100 grams monthly—post-intervention.
Explaining the Quick Rebound
Nutrition scientists believe the mechanism of the injections is key to understanding the accelerated regain.
GLP-1 drugs imitate a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which moderates appetite.
"Artificially providing GLP-1 concentrations several times higher than the body's typical production could lead to the body to produce less of its own natural hormone, and could reduce responsiveness to its actions," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition researcher.
"Withdrawal of this GLP-1 'fix' leads to appetite is uncontrolled, making excessive eating far more likely."
A Chronic Condition?
Medical guidelines recommend the jabs for individuals with obesity-related health risks, accompanied by recommended lifestyle changes.
Professionals contend that, due to the likelihood of weight regain, the treatment should be considered ongoing.
This perspective is supported by drug manufacturers, who state that the findings "highlight the chronic nature of excess weight," akin to managing diseases like diabetes.
Patient Accounts
Individuals who have come off the jabs report a sudden resurgence of hunger.
"It felt as if a switch that goes on and you're instantly extremely hungry," said an individual.
This difficulty is worsened if patients have not established sustainable lifestyle or habit changes during therapy.
Growing Use
Survey data indicate that a significant number of people in the UK have tried these injections in the past year, with desire continuing to grow.
- Use is greater among females than males.
- The 40s and 50s age group shows the greatest usage rates.
- A large proportion access the drugs through private healthcare rather than the NHS.
In conclusion, clinicians stress that while these medications are powerful agents for weight loss, they are not a permanent cure and long-term success likely depends on ongoing behavioural support.
