A shadow market for unapproved slimming drugs is being driven by social media fitness personalities and vendors on messaging platforms, based on recent findings.
Investigational Drug Acquiring Traction Online
The experimental drug, which is still in research studies, is being promoted by online personalities for its supposed fat-burning properties. Followers are urged to contact these accounts privately for source information, while also obtaining promotional offers.
Thriving Commerce on Social Networks
Additionally, a robust trade exists on messaging services, where groups with thousands of members share comparison photos, administration instructions and claims of rapid British shipping. Vendors promote the drug there before directing customers to WhatsApp for purchases.
Learning About The Experimental Drug
Retatrutide is an experimental injection developed by US drugmaker Eli Lilly. The treatment targets three intestinal hormones – glucagon-like peptide-1, glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide and glucagon. Preliminary studies indicate it could help patients reduce up to 25% of their total weight. Nicknamed the “triple G”, the drug is being hailed digitally as the successor to Ozempic.
Healthcare Experts Express Concerns
Nevertheless, physicians and pharmacists have cautions that the distribution of what remains an unapproved medication in the United Kingdom is a cause for concern and could result in users injecting substances of unknown origin.
Several professionals stated the popularity for the experimental drug could be linked to the increasing cost of approved weight loss products such as Mounjaro.
Regulatory Position and Enforcement
Marketing the unapproved drug on TikTok or Telegram is illegal in the UK, as it is an unlicensed medication that cannot be promoted or distributed for human use under the Human Medicines Regulations 2012.
Some influencers attempt to sidestep the regulations by referring to the substance as a “research chemical” or describing it as “not for human consumption”. The substance is not a restricted substance, but advertising and supply can still violate pharmaceutical, advertising, and customer regulations, potentially leading to fines, prosecution or prison.
Service Response and Content Removal
Based on TikTok, the service has taken down violative material and banned associated hashtags and query recommendations. The organization stated it was committed to maintaining the platform safe and allocating resources in enhancing enforcement strategies.
Digital Marketplace Activities
Research also found communities with up to nine thousand members selling retatrutide using Telegram's built-in search feature, which functions like a online catalog. Entering “retatrutide” instantly displays channels with thousands of members, populated with photos of weight loss, glowing testimonials and step-by-step guides for mixing or administering at residence.
After minutes of entering one community, a seller shared contact information, where the majority of purchases occur. The seller sent an instruction manual and promised shipping within 48 hours. When asked whether the product was authentic, one seller said: “You can’t be sure.” Another shared a image of a supposed laboratory certificate. Not one asked about body mass, medical conditions or previous experience.
Product Details and Pricing
Within these communities, messages show dark colored parcels with Royal Mail stickers, claiming to include new batches. One message stated: “It took eight of us to load them this morning.”
Buyers can select between dry substance containers, mixed at home with purified liquid, or ready-to-use injectors usually priced at 160 pounds for 20 milligrams. When questioned how long a pen should be used, vendors give contradictory answers ranging from a several days to “depends on your body”.
Platform Moderation and Safety Measures
A spokesperson for the messaging service stated it actively moderated dangerous material on its service including content that promoted the “misuse of controlled medications”. The company noted that it eliminated “millions of pieces of harmful content each day”.
Medical Professional Cautions
“Individuals are administering substances they cannot confirm. Even if the research behind retatrutide is sound, these online versions may not contain what they advertise,” stated a pharmacy expert, the director of pharmacy at Chemist4U.
Dr Crystal Wyllie of an online medical service connected the surge in interest to current price rises for authorized slimming drugs such as Mounjaro. “With costs increasing, patients are turning to online platforms. But counterfeit treatments are extremely risky. You can’t be certain what’s contained or whether the conditions they were made in was clean,” she said.
Her team has previously seen patients injured by self-injection from unverified sources. “We understand the frustration, but purchasing from messaging apps or communication platforms is taking chances with your health,” said Wyllie. “These materials could be contaminated or improperly measured.”
Producer Statement
A spokesperson from Eli Lilly stated the substance was in phase 3 research studies and had not been reviewed or approved by any government authority globally. “Consequently at this point no one can market [it] for human use,” they said, noting that any item “misleadingly claiming itself as a Lilly experimental substance not yet authorized … may expose patients to possibly serious medical dangers”.
