The former Brazilian leader has been arrested after authorities concluded he posed a serious risk of fleeing while under house arrest.

The ex-president was found guilty of planning a military coup in September and given more than over two decades in incarceration, but he continued under confinement pending court reviews.

Brazilian Supreme Court Justice the presiding justice said the action to imprison the 70-year-old politician was a precautionary step after fresh information emerged.

This included attempting to break his tracking device and a call for a supporters' gathering that could "allow for a potential flight.

Court Filing Details Escape Risks

In a paperwork permitting the arrest, the judge said intelligence from the facility tracking his home detention suggested the one-time head of state's plan to remove the surveillance device to ensure success in his getaway".

This, it said, would be assisted by the disorder caused by the demonstration called by his offspring.

His offspring, Flávio, who holds office as a congressional representative, called for a gathering of his followers near the former president's residence to take place on the weekend.

Flávio Bolsonaro wrote on digital networks on Friday: Will you battle for your homeland, or see it all from your mobile device there on your settee? I invite you to fight with us."

He said the demonstration would be so followers could seek divine intervention for his physical condition and for the restoration of democratic rule in our nation."

Embassy Asylum Concerns

Part of the judge's ruling was the possibility of Bolsonaro's "relocation to embassies near the dwelling, considering that the investigations revealed a record of planning to request asylum through a diplomatic representation", a announcement said.

The judicial paperwork underscores that the US embassy in the capital, Brasilia, is located around 13km from the former president's residence.

Global Responses

His judicial problems have provoked anger from fellow right-wing populist US President President Trump, causing him to impose a fifty percent tax on imports of Brazilian goods.

He is being detained in a national police facility in Brazil's capital city and will experience a custody hearing on the following day.

Latest Court Petitions

It was only on last Friday that the ex-leader's attorneys asked the High Court to allow him to serve his whole jail sentence under home confinement, with tracking devices.

They also asked that he be permitted to exit his dwelling for medical care, saying he required regular treatment for lung conditions and other health problems.

Background on Conviction

The former president was determined responsible of leading a plot aimed at maintaining his control after he was defeated in the 2022 election to his political opponent, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.

Top judicial officials said that he was aware of a scheme which encompassed plans to kill his opponent and his running partner, Alckmin, and to detain and kill Alexandre de Moraes - the Supreme Court justice who has been managing Bolsonaro's trial.

The conspiracy was stopped because it couldn't obtain the support of the army and air force commanders. His successor was inaugurated without incident on 1 January 2023.

But a following week, on 8 January, thousands of his followers attacked and damaged official structures in the federal district, Brazil's capital.

The security forces intervened and around fifteen hundred individuals were detained.

The magistrates found that the rioters had been incited by the former president whose scheme, they said, was for the national armed forces to take action, bring back stability and bring him back to power.

At the time, his attorneys called the over 27-year sentence "absurdly excessive.

He was also barred from campaigning for office until the year 2060 - eight years later after the conclusion of his imprisonment.

The one-time head of state called the trial a "witch hunt and said it was aimed at blocking him participating in the next presidential race.
