The Iconic Puzzle Game Didn't Triumph at This Gaming Ceremony — A New Category Could Fix That

Whenever a major prize-giving event nears, you'll find a demand for the addition fresh award types to acknowledge overlooked contributions and fill the spirits of fans dedicated to specific genres.

My colleague has already made for a horror game category. That would be fantastic. Equally deserving are tabletop games, this being a passionate advocate's mission. But they will have to forgive me for pushing forward just as with other single-minded supporters, there's a strong justification backing this proposal stands as crucial above others. Here's the proposal: We need a classification for brain-teasing titles.

Categorizing Game Types

Categorizing art by genre defies precise measurement; it’s very subjective, and inevitably start arguments concluding with vague boundaries. It's understandable that film award organizations don’t do it. But it is a necessary evil for the industry of video games, that demonstrate such variety they hardly constitute as a single art form.

For comprehensive acknowledgment of achievement in video games to be recognized, while allowing diverse titles to have a chance for representation, classification by type becomes crucial.

Present Award Structure

Prominent interactive entertainment events currently feature genre categories for Action-oriented games, Adventure-action titles, Role-Playing, Fighting, Sim/Strategy, and Sports/Racing games. Collectively, these six categories effectively encompass many game types, and you can find room accommodating various experiences.

Not so for brain-teasing titles. There’s simply nowhere to accommodate them. Examine these examples from this year’s best games, all very different: the architectural riddles from a specific release, intense tile-matching of another game, and the sweetly sociological logic puzzles in another game. Where could they possibly go within current classifications? Simply put, no category fits.

Acknowledgment Issues

Many instances occur outstanding logic titles launched regularly without proper recognition at major award shows, unless they happen to qualify award groups including Mobile Game, VR/AR Game, or the intensely contested small studio competitions.

  • One classic puzzle game received no recognition for anything that year
  • A different innovative game received no nominations during that ceremony
  • Popular arranging title got ignored recently
  • Just some puzzle games scraped into niche award types

Significance of Puzzle Games

These are often compact experiences, but the art in brain-teasers carries substantial weight. Iconic mobile puzzle games stand as the most-played games in the world continuing this trend for many years.

The iconic tile-matching title competes with well-known building titles competing to become most purchased experience; it’s also in the running for top gaming experience. Puzzle games are foundational for gaming as medium, and they are in conversation across multiple categories.

Proposal and Rationale

Brain-teasers wouldn't encounter such difficulty. It would be easy to populate five nominees with fascinating, diverse, deserving games each ceremony simply — or rather, with difficulty, since numerous excellent many worthy titles.

To emphasize again, these are games lacking appropriate categories at major gaming awards. Puzzle game makers function at the demanding boundary game development, creating some of most fundamental forms of gaming itself. Similar to cinema stunt performers, they merit acknowledgment. Let’s not keep them waiting decades.
